Sports Playoff push continues for midget teams By Albertan Staff
The Olds Midget Mustangs are on to the next round of the North Central Minor Hockey Association’s Midget Tier I playoffs.
A two-game sweep of the Camrose Evraz Kodiaks put the Mustangs into the league semi-final against the Wetaskiwin Kings, who finished second overall in the regular season.
By virtue of a 5-3 home-ice win on Friday night and a 4-1 win in Camrose on Saturday in a rugged affair, the Mustangs stayed on the championship side of the primarily Midget AA league draw even though it is the first year back in the top tier following several years in the lower levels.
Friday night, a five-point night by Ryan Thomson – including three goals – paced the Mustangs to the important opening game win in the best of three series.
Tyrel Oulton and Spencer Dorowicz also scored for the Mustangs while Tyhler Keith picked up the win in net.
Saturday night in Camrose, Thomson and Dorowicz each had a goal and an assist to lead the Olds attack while Adam Waddell and Brandon Kosik picked up single markers in the series clinching win. Ethan Jemieff stopped 29 of 30 shots to earn the victory between the pipes.
The best-of-three league semi-final has to be completed by March 21 with game time undetermined as of press time on Monday.
Midget Broncos move on Josh Hammer picked up three goals and three assists in the win while Riordan Oulton was the top point-getter with two goals and five assists in the Saturday afternoon contest in Drayton Valley. Aaron Miller had a goal and five assists while Clinton Armitage and Rhett Couture each had two goals and one assist in the rout. Brett Embleton picked up the win in net for the Broncos. The two-game, total goals series between the local squad and Innisfail must be completed by March 21.
Midget C Hawks in consolation After a regular season with only five league wins, the Hawks will take part in a round robin playoff against the losers of five of the six first-round series. The five games have to be completed by March 21 with the top two teams after the round robin, playing off for the consolation title.
Girls’ midget team into semifinals The Renegades – who’ll be heading to Midget B provincials later this month – will play in one semi-final with the same total-goals format. See next week’s Albertan for more on the other teams from the OMHA.
