Sports Innisfail man takes Bowden Duathlon Paul Frey, Olds Albertan
Innisfail farmer John Buyks showed the younger set how it was done on Friday during the Bowden duathlon, finishing the five kilometre cycling course and one kilometre run in 21 minutes and 12 seconds. The 57-year-old paced the field of, in many cases, much younger competitors in his fourth time at the event.
“The run is always tough. Then you come off the bike and your legs are going in a certain rhythm and you have to transfer that into running. You can’t ease off (on the run). On the bike you can ease off,” he said.
Buyks said the course offered a bit a challenge, especially with the wind gusting once competitors got out on the highway. With a couple of climbs factored into the course, it made for a bit of tough run.
Tracey Willert of Bowden finished second in the individual event with a time of 21:45 while Kelly Brewster, also of Bowden, finished third with a time of 21:51.
Daniella Raduner and Sandra Popp finished first in the team event with a time of 23:17. The pair hails from west of Bowden and Switzerland, respectively. Sara Willert and Jennifer Wood of Bowden finished second in the team event with a time of 23:55. Ceri Richards and Kendra Reimert of Bowden finished third in the team event with a time of 23:37.
A total of 29 competitors took part in the event, including seven teams. This was the fourth race held in Bowden.
According to Sian Richards of the Bowden Physiotherapy Clinic, the event is an excellent way to get the community active. The clinic ran an eight-week training camp for competitors prior to the race to get competitors ready for the challenge.
