Local talent highlights coffee house
Andrew Wild, Olds Albertan

Anyone looking for a late-winter escape can be taken away by dramatic tales of far-off lands this weekend.

The Coburn Community Club is holding a night of storytelling and music at its 1001 Arabian Nights Coffee House set for 7:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Coburn Community Hall.

According to café host Mary Hays, the program is designed to be an evening of fun and entertainment that will feature the storyteller Scheherezade guiding attendees through the stories of 1001 Arabian Nights that ultimately saved her life along with several musical presentations.

"It’ll be a real feast for the senses in every way," Hays enthused. "We hold regular events so we’re always looking for something interesting and we thought this would be interesting to people."

The program will feature storytelling by Hays and Cassy Welburn of Calgary, along with local musical group Voice Dance that features the talents of Lorrie Lipski, Anja Hamel and Kate Chapman. The night will also feature Olds resident Barb Dwyer playing the hurdy gurdy, a stringed instrument similar to a violin that produces sound by running strings over a rosined wheel. The instrument is commonly used in several forms of European folk music and Dwyer is considered a world-renowned composer with the hurdy gurdy.

Other performers include Hakan Baymak and Hendrik Hazenveld drumming for the evening along with Criscita capping the evening with belly dancing.

"We think (the music) will be a wonderful tie-in with the stories of 1001 Arabian Nights," Hays suggested. "And the stories tend to be very intriguing."

The evening will also feature coffee and refreshments along with a donation to be made to the charity Breaking Bread in support of education of women in Afghanistan.

Tickets are $10 and available at Life’s Treasures leading up to the event. Hays said due to limited capacity at the Coburn Hall, interested people are encouraged to pick up their tickets ahead of time if possible.

The hall is located 1.5 km east of the Olds overpass on the QEII Highway and 6.4 km south on Rge. Rd. 10. More information can be obtained by contacting Mary Hays at 403-556-2818.
