Letter to the Editor Uptown crosswalks unsafe
Dear Editor:
The crosswalks in the uptown are very unsafe as a lot of drivers speed through the crosswalk without slowing down or looking if anyone is crossing. I was almost hit in the middle of the crosswalk from Craig’s Corner to the other side of the street. This crosswalk is not marked as the town did not paint the crossing in 2009.
I was also trying to cross the crosswalk from the Treasury Branch to the Lotus Gardens. Again I’m in the middle of the crosswalk and guess what … no one stopped. The people in the vehicle looked at me and went on their merry way.
I have seen mothers trying to cross on this crosswalk and they are standing waiting for a driver to stop. Again this crosswalk was not done in 2009 and the town hasn’t done their job. The crosswalk coming out of Shoppers Drug Mart was not done in 2009 also. With a new clinic going in the Shoppers location there will be extra people and mothers with their families trying to cross the street. I ask the Town of Olds, how much is a human life worth?
The uptown crosswalks are unsafe and there has been people hit by vehicles because drivers are not slowing down or watching for people. The town had better use a better quality of paint and mark all crosswalks this spring or get solar energy stoplights at all crossings for drivers to see.
My suggestion is to make a walking area from the eye clinic to the streetlight. No vehicles in there.
Drivers sure seem to stop for jaywalkers in the noon hour, yet they can’t stop for people on crosswalks.
S. Schultz
