About $9,000 worth of fines levied

A distracted driving blitz by Olds RCMP on March 4 resulted in 30 charges being laid, totalling about $9,000 in fines.

There were 28 traffic stops made.

A distracted driving offence carries a $287 fine and three demerit points.

The offence can include the use of electronic devices, manually programming GPS devices or audio players, reading, writing and personal grooming.

Police say holding a cellphone while using its speaker phone function does not count as using a hands-free device. The phone must be activated by a single touch or be voice activated.
