Storm causes massive damage
A storm that hit Olds last Tuesday left damage in some parts of the community while leaving other sections relatively unscathed.
At Olds College, there were some broken tree branches and extensive damage to gardens, but Gary Pauly, a grounds supervisor, said an assessment won’t reveal the full extent of the damage until this week when damaged flowers are pulled.
“There was definitely lots of damage. We fully expect some of the material to be done (for the season) and some to come back. The (debris) plugged some storm drains … and there was some puddling up (of water),” he said, adding that the culprit was hail this time around.
Several inches of hail were left on some area roads hours after the late afternoon storm on July 31.
Area roads were so inundated by rainfall that water was running over sidewalks in some parts of the community.
Many residents reported flooded basements, and damaged gardens as well as landscaping.
Town crews along with volunteers were out and about in the community Wednesday cleaning up from the storm, including removing fallen trees from the Olds cemetery.
