U-14 girls go 2-1 at provincials

The U-14 girls soccer team finished the provincial championships with a 2-1 record on the weekend in Beaumont, finishing the tournament seventh out of 12 teams in its division.

The team opened the tournament losing 1-0 to Sherwood Park. It followed that up with a 1-0 win against Rimbey and a 2-0 win against Sylvan Lake.

“To me, it proved that we belonged there, but we didn’t have our very best game in the first game and we paid for it,” said David Higginbottom, the team’s coach.

Higginbottom said despite the stiff competition, the team played well.

“I think we did run into some very strong competition, but I think our girls handled it well. It was unfortunate that we lost the first game – we had chances and just couldn’t score – but they showed that they belonged at that level. We were very proud of the effort,” he said.

The U-12 girls also competed at the tournament, but results weren’t available at press time Monday.
