Second phase of expansion project gets underway

A $15-million expansion project will add a new 96-bed medium security unit at Bowden Institution.

The construction follows a $9.25-million expansion on the minimum-security annex that was completed last January and provided 50 new accommodation spaces as well as additional program space. The rated capacity is now 130.

In 2010 the federal government said the expansion at Bowden, as well as a similar project at Drumheller Institution, was in response to recent legislative changes that are forcing criminals, particularly violent offenders, to serve longer terms of imprisonment.

Media relations, with the Correctional Service of Canada, said the new unit in Bowden will be completed in 2013.
