Wild Rose MP Blake Richards announced last Friday that the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 105 Olds received an $18,000 grant from the federal government’s New Horizons for Seniors Program.

The grant will enable the legion to buy new handicap-access doors, which will open at the touch of a button.

“A lot of the veterans use the electric buggies. Now, they just push a button, and the doors will open,” said Chris Schaper, Royal Canadian Legion Branch 105 Olds president.

The New Horizons for Seniors Program funds projects that provide accessibility, opportunities or events for seniors.

“They are very small projects but they make a big difference in the community. It’s a really great program,” said Richards.

The legion applied for a grant from the program last year, and was one of the successful applicants.

“We are pretty excited to see that. The legion does a lot of great work here in Olds,” said Richards.

“I’m a member myself, and I have been to many events here over the years at the legion. There are a lot of community events that take place at the legion.”

Richards encourages all eligible groups and organizations to apply for a New Horizons for Seniors Program grant.

“It’s actually open as we speak now. Anyone who wants information, please contact my office,” he said.

“We can share the application process and how that’s done with them.”

The legion’s new doors should be received and installed before the end of the month.
