Another three-goal performance by Chase Grenier led the Olds High School Spartans to a 3-1 victory over the Lacombe Composite High School Rams on Friday during Central Alberta High School Soccer League play. The victory preserved the Spartans’ undefeated season at 4-0-1 heading into the team’s final two games and playoffs this weekend.

Grenier staked the Spartans to a 1-0 lead early in the first half as the Spartans applied much pressure downfield, attacking at every opportunity and limiting the Rams’ chances in the first half. Grenier added another goal early in the second half as the Rams got a few more scoring opportunities, but keeper Bernd Van’t Klooster was equal to the task. Later in the second half, Grenier scored on free kick, bending the ball around the wall and just inside the far post.

A goal late in the second half by the Rams spoiled Van’t Klooster’s shutout bid.

“I was really happy with how they played, really strong possession style, lots of passing around the back end. Excellent passing all around, so we’re very pleased,” said Erin Baker, co-coach of the Spartans.

The Spartans were due to play the Hunting Hills High School Lightning on Monday in Red Deer and then a makeup game that was washed out earlier in the season against the Notre Dame High School Cougars today.

The playoffs are due to take place on Saturday in Red Deer.
