The Olds College junior varsity women’s basketball team dropped both their games at the Ralph Klein Centre over the weekend, losing 64-44 to the St. Mary’s University College Lightning on Saturday and 73-68 to the Prairie Bible College Pilots the previous night.

The Broncos dug themselves an early hole against the Lightning Saturday, down 30-18 at the half. Despite a valiant effort in the second half, the Broncos were unable to sink many of their scoring opportunities, leading to the loss. Stacey Bohnet led the Broncos on Saturday with 13 points.

Following the game, coach Alla Shchepotkina said she believes that with more experience, the results will improve.

“We lost (Saturday) … because the girls are not experienced enough and I can’t say that we lost because the other team was much stronger. No, we could play this team easily, we just don’t score,” she said.

Shchepotkina said the Broncos gave a good defensive effort, but the lack of scoring hurt them.

Against the Pilots, Shchepotkina said the difference in the game – a much closer contest – was the Broncos’ inability to knock down scoring opportunities.

“I believe they will find their own game. Everything comes with experience,” she said.

The pair of losses gives the JV Broncos a 4-2 record on the season, good for second in pool A of the Alberta Colleges Athletic League standings behind the Varsity Broncos, who sport a 6-0 record.

In other Bronco hardcourt news, the women’s varsity team dumped the St. Mary’s University College Lightning on Friday 69-53, while the varsity men beat the Lightning 68-66. The men lost on Thursday to the Canadian University College Aurora 91-86. Rounding out the action for the Broncos, the JV men’s team improved their record to 2-3 on the season with a 95-63 win Saturday over the PBI Pilots.
