The result was never in doubt right from the opening tipoff at the Ralph Klein Centre on Wednesday as the Olds College junior varsity women’s team was up 24-3 after the first 10 minutes of play.

Employing a full court press from the start, the Broncos’ stifling defence was able to force many steals and turnovers throughout the game on the way to a 101-16 victory over the Canadian University College Aurora in Alberta Colleges Athletic League basketball action. It was the Aurora’s inaugural game in the junior varsity women’s program.

Leann Miller led the Broncos with a team-high 18 points, while grabbing double figures in rebounds as well. A total of six Broncos reached double figures in points during the game.

Alla Shchepotkina, the Broncos coach, said while she was happy with the result, she wanted the team to maintain its focus even as the difference on the scoreboard was growing.

“It was a little bit harder for the girls to stay focused until the end because, when it’s an easy game, sometimes you’re not in the game after awhile,” she said.

“We were trying to work on our defence and we had a chance (during the game) to use it,” she said.

Shchepotkina said she felt there were several Broncos players who performed well, including Stacey Bohnet, Layce Donaldson and Lexi Kambeitz.

Wednesday was the team’s only game of the week. The Broncos will travel to Saskatchewan this weekend for action against the Great Plains College Sundogs in Swift Current and the Millar College of the Bible Edge in Pambrun. The next home action for the Broncos is Feb. 3 against the Prairie Bible Institute Pilots.
